Winter's breath touches us ....

Snow falls at Perisher last weekend - they had four snowfalls over the weekend

Wow!  Did a HLSS drive over to Goulburn (pre-admission clinic) yesterday afternoon - sun in my eyes all the way over and driving into the setting sun on the way home - never got in and put the car to bed in the compound until 6pm (by which time it was dark) and I was bone-chilled all evening.

Cold night - Cold morning,  with areas of severe morning frost (our backyard was white at 8.30 am). Sunny now and should be mostly sunny this afternoon with light winds. Daytime maximum temperatures between -2C and 13C.

One of my old clients (mid-to-late eighties) passed away yesterday morning at 5.30am. This is the season for it and there will be hardly a day now until winter's end that there isn't a death/funeral notice on the door of the news agent's shop.

Sorry Susan Heather - I accidently deleted your comment.

HLSS is abbreviation for Home Living Support Service, I am a volunteer driver for the service in this region, driving (mostly elderly persons, to medical and hospital appointments throughout the region.

John, I worked for HAAC in this area as a volunteer driver last year. I remember a trip to Albury and I felt the same by the time I got home at 9.30pm. I still had to add the half hour drive home that night and I couldn't wait to get there, I can tell you. Winter time I like to stay close to home. Sadly I had to give it up as it was just costing me too much in fuel to run in and out of Temora. They were giving me more and more long travel work as time went on. I think it was because I was the only female and the ladies preferred a female companion. I even had a couple asking me to come in to the doctor with them.
Today I have to brave the chill outside and go out to the wood yard to bring a trailer load into the shed, hang some washing out and mow the house yard. Bah! I'd rather be next to the fire with my craft.

Sue, our 'distant volunteers' (we have one out at Gundaroo, for example, and a couple at Murrumbateman) are paid mileage allowance if they have to use their own car to come into town to use the fleet vehicles - tho' our Gundaroo driver (now there's a Lawsonesque title) uses her own car and transports mostly locals in her own area. She omly does 'Fridays', her regular day off work.

I'm sitting here wondering if I should head off to the beach tomorrow for a swim while you guys are looking at snow and feeling the cold. Good on you for doing such worthwhile volunteer work though...it's people like you who make the world a lovely place and me to smile.

Ahhhhh! If I didn't do it I'd only be hanging around street benches chatting telling lies to/with a lot of other old buggers! lol!

John - this sounds like the scheme where we used to live that brought patients down here to the hospital for appointments - a wonderful service. There is also a new air service that has just been started here by someone who has just returned from Australia and helped run the service there.

Susan Heather - for some reason I seem to be unable to post your comments - Blogger tells me it's been published but it still doesn't appear??

We are now restricted to a specific region as similar HACC/HLSS volunteer units emerge in surrounding regions. They are great and in rural areas really serve a very special need in the lack of regular, reliable and cost-efficient transportation services.

Ahhh! There you are! Silly me!

HA-HA-HA! Better than the local I guess. (I've asked for a fuel allowance and they refused.) Sue

What a great way of contributing to the community. I am a volunteer with Lifeline and I get a great deal more than I give.
Brisk here this morning too - and the weather boffins are telling us it may go to minus 6 on Thursday. We will see. I prefer winter to summer's searing heat though.
